So we took four of the kids on a family vacation to a condo at Smith Mountain Lake last week to do some waterskiing, tubing, and general chilling. And it was time to return the ski boat to the rental shop before it closed for the night and a storm was coming, so my husband and daughter quickly drove the boat up the lake through the wind and rain to return it, only to discover upon arriving there that the tube we rented that used to be on the back of the boat wasn’t anymore.
Meanwhile the other kids and I were about to leave the condo and go pick them up, but then discovered that we couldn’t find the car keys. Finally we located them and were on our way when we got the call saying that the tube was somewhere on those 20 miles of lake. Fortunately we went to the dock and saw that some good person had found the tube and tied it up for us. Throwing the large wet thing into the back of the car we took off, only to discover that we were about to run out of gas… upon which my daughter laughingly exclaimed, “We are one hot mess!”
So, why do I love such an imperfect family, which incidentally I fit into very well? Because they’re mine. I don’t know any more where I end and they begin; we live in each other 24/7.
Then are we our brother’s keeper? Yes, because they belong to us for God gave them to us as gifts. We die in their death and live in their life as the apostle Paul says to the Corinthians, “you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together” (2 Cor 7:3).
Why does God love us? Who knows, I’m just very thankful that He does.
